Próxima estación… Muelle

According to the statement given to the newspaper El Mundo by David Pérez, regional minister of Transport and Infrastructure of the Community of Madrid, the station will exhibit on platforms and corridors different graphic pieces from Juan Carlos Argüello, as well as a space dedicated to the graffiti's writer biography.

This is the second tribute Madrid has paid to Muelle. The first one, paid in 2016 by the City Hall ,was the naming of the Juan Carlos Argüello "MUELLE" Plaza in the neighbourhood that saw him grow up.

In this ocassion, the Community of Madrid, through the subway, is the one paying tribute to the artist in the suburban station located closeby to the house where Juan Carlos lived and it's part of the subway's Line 5 that crosses Madrid from the southwest to the northeast, one of the main arteries of the capital, which 150.000 travellers use each month.

Muelle and the subway together again.

During the 80s both played  tohe game of cat and mouse, each one playing his role but without it arriving to confrontation. Juan Carlos told in an interview that he always painted during the night and over advertising posters to avoid generating an extra cleaning expense, and claimed that security guards took it as a gesture of some kind of professionalism that differenciated him from the rest.

Between 1985 and 1988 Juan Carlos focused most part of his activity in signing, one by one and station by station each of the 10 lines, the advertising posters on the subway platforms. It was on the Gran Vía subway station, in 1987, where we gave one of his few interviews, in this case to Televisión Española. In it he explained, among other anecdotes, his peculiar relationship with the subway's employees and security guards.

This relationship was also portrayed, between irony and humour, on this print that Juan Carlos made. In it he recreates with some sarcasm part of the logo and the slogan used in a subway's advertising campaign at that time.
